Soil Association Organic Apprenticeship Scheme
The twin threats of climate change and unpredictable energy supplies are leading us towards food and farming systems that are likely to look very different from the ones we are experiencing today. If the basis of the new approach is a reduction in energy reliance, more responsible energy usage, and then alternative energy production - then the requirement will be for a significantly larger and highly skilled body of business people, workers, and full and part time farmers.
The Soil Association has set up its Organic Apprenticeship Scheme which is being run in partnership with the Organic Growers Alliance and the Organic Advisory Service, with the support of Garden Organic and Duchy College.
TOG members have been involved with the setting up of this new scheme and are currently employing apprentices on their holdings as a two-year programme.
Organic apprenticeships with farm and food businesses provide individuals with practical training and direct experience of working as part of a team, combined with structured off-site group tutorial sessions or "masterclasses" which provide the theory behind the practice.
The ultimate aim of the Organic Apprenticeship Scheme is to achieve well-rounded and experienced individuals with specialist skills, if so desired, but primarily with a broad knowledge of organic agriculture and food businesses.
